FALCONS, DIPLOMACY & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Doha, Qatar. The 71st General Assembly of the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) was held this year in the desert capital of Doha, Qatar, celebrating the Ancient Art of Falconry as a deeply rooted Arab tradition and living human heritage. Hosted under the patronage of the ruling Al Thani family the event brought together falconers, conservationists, and policymakers from around the world to explore how traditional practices like falconry contribute to modern conservation – from species protection to habitat stewardship. A powerful display of international diplomacy woven through cultural heritage. A splendid, dignified event and strong credo for hunting: the sustainable use of wildlife resources.
Our firm Johann Fanzoj was honored to be invited to speak on the Art of Gunmaking as UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage and to announce a partnership with the CIC.

Falconry: A compelling example of culture-led conservation.
Falconry: A Living Human Heritage
Falconry is more than just hunting with birds of prey. It is a fascinating human-animal bond that goes back to 4000 BC, a way of life, and a form of heritage that connects communities, ecosystems, and traditions across continents. Recognized by UNESCO first in 2010 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity it now includes 24 nations in an ongoing and unprecedented display of international collaboration, supported by CIC and the IFA (International Falconry Association) under the leadership of the United Arab Emirates.
Falconry today represents not only living heritage, but also diplomacy in action – facing many of the same challenges as hunting in conveying its conservation value to the public. At this year’s CIC Assembly, this ancient art form became a metaphor: for sustainable use, for cultural diplomacy, and for the delicate balance between tradition and modern conservation science.

HUNTING AND CONSERVATION
The sustainable use of nature and wildlife is a fundamental principle in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Charter. Humans have the right to use forests and fields for forestry and hunting, to use lakes and oceans for fishing, and to make use of the soil for agriculture.

Where Falconry Meets Gunmaking – A Dialogue on Shared Heritage
Culture, craftsmanship, and tradition carry deep meaning – and at the 71st General Assembly of the CIC in Doha, a panel discussion explored just that: the shared heritage between hunting and falconry.
What can falconers and hunters learn from one another today? From public communication to wildlife management, both communities face similar challenges – visibility, misinformation, and the need to show their role in conservation.
As gunmakers, we sit at the crossroads of these traditions. Our craft is rooted in respect – for the animal, for nature, and for cultural legacy. This position gives us a voice in the broader conversation about how traditional practices can stay relevant and understood.
UNESCO plays a vital role in helping us communicate our values and traditions with dignity and credibility. By recognizing hunting and falconry as Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO provides a dignified framework that affirms their cultural value and protects them from oversimplified or unjust criticism. It encourages meaningful dialogue and helps present these traditions not as relics, but as living practices—rooted in history, craftsmanship, and ecological responsibility.

One of the unforgettable highlights of the 71st CIC General Assembly in Doha was the appearance of the Al Gannas Falconry Club.
Despite the falcons being in molt the club went to great lengths to present a stunning live demonstration. Accompanied by a beautifully produced short film, their presentation offered a catching portrayal of falconry’s timeless beauty and living legacy.
Their presence was more than a gesture; it was a tribute to tradition, dedication, and the power of storytelling.
